I love sweet potato and CG and I found a delicious savory sweet potato recipe at a local BBQ joint. Cumin and fresh cilantro add a tasty and surprising twist to this delicious sweet potato dish, so if you’re looking for an alternative to a classic candied sweet potato, then try this potato recipe out; it’s easy to cook and makes a versatile side dish.

Sweet Potato Recipe Ingredients

3 SWEET POTATOES rough cut
1 cup fresh CILANTRO chopped
2-3 cloves GARLIC minced
1 tsp CUMIN
½ CHILI POWDER
SALT to taste

How to Make a Savory Sweet Potato Recipe

  • Cut most of your sweet potato into rustic sizes, but I like to cut about ½ cup of the potato into smaller sizes so it’ll cook down faster.
  • Heat oil in a skillet on medium heat and add in the potato and saute for a few minutes.
  • Add in the seasoning and garlic and cook for another 2 minutes. I added measurements in the recipe for seasoning, but really it’s all season to taste, especially the cumin; put a little more than you think you want, and you might be surprised how tasty it gets.
  • Add in 1 cup of water, cover your skillet and bring the dish to a simmer. Simmer until the potato becomes soft enough to smash with a fork and add a little more water if needed.
  • Smash about ⅓ of the potato in the skillet, adjust seasoning to taste, and continue to cook to the consistency you desire.
  • When the potato is done, turn off the heat and stir in the fresh cilantro.

Sweet Potato Hummus – Easy Sweet Potato Recipe

If you love hummus, be sure and give this sweet potato hummus recipe a try. It’s super easy and healthy, just like classic hummus, and very creamy. If you have a hard time getting your family excited about chickpeas, then this sweet potato recipe might be the answer.

What you need for Sweet Potato Hummus

1 medium size cooked SWEET POTATO
3 cloves GARLIC
2 Tbsp EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
3-4 Tbsp TAHINI
2 Tbsp LEMON JUICE
SALT to taste …but about ½ tsp is cool
LEMON ZEST optional

How to make Sweet Potato Hummus

Cook the sweet potato. But do you peel the potato first? That’s up to you, but I like to leave the potato peeling on, because it’s added taste and texture and nutrition, so why not? For hummus, I generally nuke the sweet potato in the microwave. Wash the potato, then pierce the skin of the potato 4 or 5 times with a fork, then microwave the potato for 5 to 6 minutes.

Put all ingredients into a food processor and then blend until smooth. Check Kitchen Food Processor prices on Amazon. If the hummus is overly thin, you can thicken it with added sweet potato. If the hummus is too thick, add a spoonful of water at a time until the hummus reaches the consistency you like, or add a bit of extra olive oil.

Serve sweet potato hummus with warm pita bread, pita chips, crackers, or raw fruit and vegetables.

Candied sweet potatoes make a great holiday dish, or anytime dish. It’s decadent and flavorful, and this candied sweet potato recipe is perfect as a side for all kinds of savory meals. It’s an easy 4 ingredient recipe, or only 3 ingredients if you want to skip the vanilla; the dish will taste yummy either way.

What you need for Candied Sweet Potatoes Recipe

4-6 large SWEET POTATOES
1-1½ cup SUGAR
1 stick BUTTER
1-2 tsp VANILLA EXTRACT

How to Make Sweet Sweet Potatoes

This candied sweet potato recipe is super simple and adjustable, so use as much butter and sugar as you like. The above ingredient ratios are just guidelines; there is no wrong way to make this recipe. You’ll have to go way out of your way to screw it up, so adjust the ratios as you like. Use more or less butter and sugar, depending on your desires.

One important part of this recipe is to peel and clean your potatoes well. Remove the skins and any dark blemishes on the peeled potatoes. Dark areas on the potatoes will become even darker as the dish cooks, and it will look quite unappealing.

  • Peel and clean the potatoes.
  • Cut potatoes into uniform wedges.
  • Spread half the sugar on the bottom of an ungreased, oven safe dish.
  • Add potatoes to the dish and spread evenly.
  • Top potatoes with remaining sugar.
  • Cut the butter over the top of the potatoes.
  • Cover dish with aluminum foil and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove foil cover. The butter and sugar will be melted. Add vanilla into the dish, and toss the potatoes with the liquid.
  • Return dish to the oven uncovered and continue baking until the potatoes are soft, but not mushy.
  • The butter and sugar in the dish will thicken as the potatoes cool.
  • Serve candied sweet potatoes hot or cold.

Potato Cake Recipe — How To Make Sweet Potato Latkes

Check out this simple potato cake recipe. Or do you call them potato pancakes? Or potato latkes? I like to use sweet potatoes because they are less starchy and cook up quicker than white potatoes, plus sweet potatoes just taste great, and they are a good nutrition and energy source.

Ingredients to Make A Sweet Potato Cake Recipe :

1 med SWEET POTATO
ONION (½ as much as potato)
Fresh HOT PEPPER (optional)
2 EGGS
2 Tbsp FLOUR
1 tsp CURRY POWDER
½ tsp CHILI POWDER (optional)
……or whatever seasonings you prefer!
SALT and PEPPER (to taste)
OIL for cooking

Are they potato latkes, potato pancakes, or potato cakes? What do you call them?

How to Make Sweet Potato Latkes :

  • Shred sweet potato into strings, and thinly slice onion into stringy lengths.
  • I like to also thinly slice a jalapeno pepper; the pepper adds a nice zing, flavor, and color, but you can skip the pepper if you’re a “fraidy cat”.
  • In a bowl, combine the potato, onion, and pepper with the flour until well coated.
  • Beat two eggs and add into the mix, stirring well.
  • Add seasonings as desired. I like a lot of seasoning, and the potato and onion like it, too, so be liberal with the salt, pepper, and flavors you prefer; it’ll make for tastier cakes.

  • Heat oil in a skillet on medium-high heat and spoon the potato mixture into the skillet and press and shape into patties. The potato cakes should be about the size and thickness of a nice ¼lb burger, but not too thin.
  • Don’t crowd the skillet. I use a ten-inch skillet and get two batches of three patties each, which is a terrible sentence, and almost sounds like math, so sorry for that.
  • Cook patties for 3-4 minutes on each side, turning carefully.
  • Adjust the burner temperature as needed; reduce heat to cook each potato patty for 3-4 minutes without burning.
  • Cook until nicely colored, then remove potato cakes from the skillet and drain on a paper towel.

It’s a great dish for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Chard Recipe with Sweet Potato

Fresh rainbow or swiss chard greens are similar to beet greens, nutritious and very tasty prepared in this healthy chard recipe. Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and antioxidants and a healthier choice for your blood sugar levels than white potatoes.

Healthy Sweet Potato Chard Recipe:

2 large SWEET POTATOES
1 15 oz can CHICKPEAS, drained (or 1½ cups cooked)
4 cups CHARD (w/ spinach mixed, if desired)
1 15 oz can BROTH
1 15 oz can DICED TOMATOES
1 large ONION (chopped)
6 GARLIC cloves (chopped fine)
1 inch fresh GINGER (minced)
2 Tbsp OLIVE OIL
1 tsp PAPRIKA
1 tsp ground CUMIN
1 Tbsp ground CORIANDER
1 tsp ground TURMERIC
1/2 tsp ground CINNAMON
1/2 tsp SALT
1 tsp ground BLACK PEPPER
— Optional Accompaniments —
COUSCOUS, QUINOA

Chard and sweet potato make an excellent vegetarian meal.

How to make a Healthy Chard and Sweet Potato Dish

Heat olive oil in a large skillet or pot. Saute the onion for a few minutes minutes then add garlic, ginger, and stalk (if using chard), and saute a few minutes more until onions soften.
Stir in paprika, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper.
Add diced tomatoes and broth.
Bring to a boil, then add sweet potato and chickpeas. Simmer 25 to 30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Stir in roughly chopped chard leaves for last 10 minutes (if using spinach, add leaves last 2 minutes).
Serve over couscous, quinoa, or all on its lonesome with a garnish of cucumber, chopped cilantro, and lemon zest.
It’s especially good over quinoa, and the protein in the quinoa makes this recipe a great main dish for a vegetarian meal.
